I’m Interested in Making an Adoption Plan For My Child

Adoption help for older children
Often, we hear from women who have searched for “How to give a child up for adoption”. These are women who are struggling to parent or who have decided that they want more for their child than they can provide.

Other times, they want their child to have a stable, two-parent family or life just isn’t working out how they planned. Whatever your reason for considering adoption for your child, we will provide you with caring and supportive help during the steps to adoption.

At Lifetime Adoption, we are adoption specialists, and we work with a number of women who are unsure on how to give a child up for adoption. We provide support and help as you learn more about adoption and if it is the right choice for your child. There is no cost to you at any time, and we will make sure that you thoroughly understand the steps to adoption, the process, and the outcomes.

Whether you’re unable to parent another child, having financial struggles, or wish to give your child more than what you can offer right now, adoption can be a positive, loving choice. No matter your situation, you’re not alone, and open adoption gives you many options.

Most of Lifetime’s adoptions are of newborns and infants, although we do work with adoptive parents seeking to adopt a toddler, preschool-aged child, or a child up to seven years old. When you contact Lifetime to make an adoption plan for a child older than seven years old, we can provide you with referrals to get the necessary resources in your area. You may also wish to reach out to social services, consider a temporary guardianship, or a kinship adoption.

One of the first steps to adoption is to learn about the choices you have with adoption. Call or text 1-800-923-6784 anytime to request information by mail or email on how to give a child up for adoption and to speak with a caring adoption coordinator about your situation.

You can create a custom adoption plan for your child. If you are wondering about how to give a child up for adoption, you have three main choices in adoption:

1. You choose the Adoptive Parents for your child. You may choose from a variety of adoptive families across the country. You can talk to, meet and email with adoptive parents that may be a good fit for your child as you make your adoption plan. Each adoptive family has been screened with extensive background checks. They understand what it means to be parents through adoption and are ready to adopt. If you would like your Lifetime coordinator to choose or recommend a family for your child, we can do that.

2. You can choose the type of contact you desire for after the adoption. When you are making an adoption plan for a child, planning for some type of future contact can be a positive step. Your child knows you so, it may be important to retain some type of connection. This can be through visits or updates with letters and photos. You choose what you want and we will find families that are looking for the same type of connection.

3. You can choose how the transition happens. With placing an older child for adoption, there is usually a transition period. This can be a few days, weeks, or even a month. It is about making the best choice for you and your child. The adoptive parents will usually travel to you, meet and spend time with you both, and then you can work out a plan together.

Once these choices are established, we help you through each step of the process, including meeting the family, meeting with the attorney to review the legal process and sign the papers, and providing counseling to you if you desire. Remember, all of this is at no cost to you.

Many mothers choose to speak with our counselor during this process. Free counseling is always available, before or after the adoption. We also have peer counselors that you can speak with. Adoption can be a positive choice for everyone involved, but there can be initial grief, especially in the first few days as you adjust to the change.

It is important to understand that learning about adoption is a private choice. All information you share with us is completely confidential. We want to be sure you learn the fundamental steps to adoption and are fully aware of the process.

The answer to “How do I give a baby up for adoption?” is focused on the choices you make for your child. At Lifetime, we want to walk with you through the process, providing information, counseling, and any help we can as you consider if adoption is the right choice for your child.
